Ballads in June – Class for Young People

The North-East Ballad School is running a series of workshops for Secondary School students on Saturday mornings throughout June in the MacRobert Building, University of Aberdeen.  There will be no charge for these classes as they are supported by the Doric Board.

Students will be introduced to the repertoire of ballads sung in the North-East and taught to sing them by Janice Clark and Dr. Tom McKean. Teaching is by ear, so no formal, musical training is necessary.

North-East Ballad Circle

Would you like to join a group of singers who enjoy singing the big ballads or “muckle sangs”? Janice Clark and Dr. Tom McKean are launching a monthly ballad singing circle in the upstairs lounge in the Blue Lamp Aberdeen, on the last Thursday of every month beginning on Thursday 30th June, from 8-9pm

The North-East has been described as “The Ballad Capital of Scotland”, and many of the songs were collected here. You can’t travel anywhere in the area without finding placenames relating to ballads.

Come and join us for an hour of sharing ballads you know and love, or to learn some new ones.
